Hush!

In the pre-dawn hours today I was talking with another writer I know about how ironic it is that our most basic tools of communication - words - can often lead to major mis-communication.

One evening, a few weeks ago, I went with a friend to a prayer vigil on a shoreline for the current western hostages in Iraq. As our motley crew stood at the waters edge in the shimmering darkness, not a word was said. In the silence I was reminded of the awesome power of the universe. Reminded that in our common purpose, no words were needed.

Yesterday was talking to a woman I have known and loved for a long time. It seems her mother has to have throat surgery on the 23d and the doctors have ordered her to be on absolute silence, voice rest, following the procedure. The whole family is in shock and concerned as to how that will affect the family Christmas.

But, but...(There I go again!) it came to me what an opportunity that will be for the whole family. I shared with her how wonderful Christmas in their house can be, if they ALL went on voice rest. Instead of raising voices during the usual family gathering, why not all speak with the heart instead.

Was sharing Christmas plans with a fellow I know in Sheffield this week. As he talked I was reminded of noisy, raucous family Christmas gatherings from my past. Yes - I have had a few! You know the ones - where he who yells loudest gets heard!

But all these moments really have reinforced for me the strength, the power, of speaking from our hearts, instead of working our vocal chords. I have said this before I know, but how much more peace would prevail in the world if we all just shut our mouths and talked with our hearts and souls.

We all use words for our own purposes, often at cross purposes from our fellow travelers on this earth journey, but we so often forget the most common language which unites us all.

In the suckling of each newborn babe, truth sighs.
In a toddler's tentative grasp, truth smiles In a mother's look, truth reaches out In a lover's touch, truth reminds In the old woman's final chuckle Here on earth....

The Only Love there is embraces us, holds us, inspires us

Truth is declared....

And the One heart speaks....in silent unity, peace.

Are YOU listening?
